Near Helen, GA and the North Carolina border is Vogel State Park in Blairsville, GA. The park is centered around the small lake at the base of Blood Mountain, creating picturesque views. The park has variety of activities including fishing, hiking, swimming, kayaking, biking, mini-golf, and playgrounds.
They have a variety of trails ranging from .8 miles to 12.9 miles of hiking. We went on the short 1 mile Trahlyta Lake Trail, as well as the spur trail that leads to a waterfall as the result of a dam spilling over, which was quite nice. The trail went around the entire lake allowing you to get good views of Blood Mountain and Slaughter Mountain when they converge. We enjoyed walking around the lake and taking in some of the fantastic views.
The park also has cottages, campsites, picnic pavilions, a Civilian Conservation Corps Museum, and a general store. We spent only a short time there, but it was a great park for a weekend away from the city, relaxing with friends or family, and just enjoying nature, water activities, picnicking, and grilling out.
