Steamtown National Historic Site is located at the former rail yard of the Delaware, Lackawanna & Western Railroad in Scranton, Pennsylvania. The park honors the railroading industry and its impact on 19th and 20th century America. As such, it houses a museum that provides visitors with information about steam locomotives and how they shaped the United States. The most impressive part of the historic site, however, is the large collection of steam locomotives and train engines scattered about the rail yard. Visitors can wander through the yard checking out the different locomotives, some of which dwarf visitors with their enormous size. If you’d like to enjoy the locomotives a bit more, check the visitor center for ranger led walks or have a picnic at one of the benches nearby. Steamtown is yet another great national park site to visit, especially for train enthusiasts. A trip there will allow you to learn more about how trains revolutionized the United States and give you an up-close look at some real steam locomotives.
