A couple hours outside of Atlanta on the way to Augusta, GA is Hamburg State Park located in Mitchelll, GA. Hamburg is a water-powered grist mill from 1921 that is still in operation today. The state park offers a museum, hiking trails, camping, and lake for a plethora of activities. When we visited we walked around the lake for awhile and went over to explore the mill. The emphasis of the park is, of course, the mill, which is a unique feature as there are few operating mills still in existence. Although the mill is not regularly utilized it still grinds corn today to help teach people about the history of mills and their impact on the local community. At Hamburg State Park you can actually purchase corn that was ground by the mill. The park was very scenic, and there were very few people at Hamburg allowing you to really get out in nature and be all alone. We both found Hamburg to be very restful, scenic, and full of history, making it a nice Georgia State Park to visit.
