To those familiar with the craft beer scene, Cigar City makes some of the most sought-after beer in the country. Unfortunately, Cigar City has a small distribution footprint, so most of its beer stays in Florida, making a trip to the brewery’s tasting room a must for the craft beer fan.
The brewery is located in a large industrial building that you might miss if you’re not looking for it. We walked into the tasting room, which is, unlike the exterior of the building, warm and bright. You walk through the brewery’s store before entering the bar area, which is filled with tables. We went on a Saturday around noon, and the tasting room was already full, so be prepared to stand or wait for a table since the brewery is so popular.
Cigar City’s beers are a joy to try, but going to the tasting room is an extra treat because Cigar City brews a lot of small batch and one-off beers that they feature in their tap room. In other words, many of the beers that you can get in the tasting room you can’t get anywhere else. With over twenty taps to choose from, you’re sure to find a few beers that tickle your fancy. If you like, you can do a tasting flight for a reasonable price, or you can choose to buy full pours if you’d like to stay for awhile or if you find something you really like. We tasted several beers and enjoyed a small-batch IPA and a sherry barrel aged stout the best.
If you enjoyed the brewery, you might also like to pay a visit to Cigar City’s brewpub, a restaurant owned by Cigar City at which they serve pub style food along with a few small-batch beers brewed at the restaurant. We enjoyed a delicious pilsner and an ale brewed with copious amounts of rosemary along with our burgers that were great companions to the beer.
If you are in the Tampa area, we suggest stopping by Cigar City. Whether you’re a craft beer nerd or just looking for a casual place to hang out with family and friends, you’re sure to find a beer that suits your tastes.
