Highland Tap is a local pub and eatery located in the trendy Virginia Highlands neighborhood. The pub is located on the corner of Virginia and North Highland amidst a plethora of other restaurants, shops, and boutiques, but Highland Tap is rather neatly tucked away as a sort of friendly getaway from the hustle and bustle outside. The pub is still well-marked on its street corner, but its entrance is a narrow staircase that leads patrons immediately downstairs. As the door swings open, visitors are greeted with a dark, cozy interior with a large bar area in the center flanked by seating areas. There are quite a few TVs around the walls, but none of the screens dominates the room.
While it can sometimes get a bit noisy, the pub has a congenial and intimate atmosphere perfect for a get together with a few friends or a date night. If guests desire they can catch a game on one of the TVs, but the clientele are more likely to be talking with each other than cheering on their favorite team. Highland Tap boasts a rather large drink menu, with their bar featuring mostly local taps. In order to support each local brewery, the pub has a tap devoted to each of several local breweries, with each brewery’s tap changing on a frequent basis. The pub also has an expansive food menu, serving typical American food, although with a classier touch than many pubs. The food and drink menu is a bit pricey considering the Highland Tap is, for the most part, simply a nice neighborhood bar, but the location and charm of the pub makes for a nice evening. Overall, the Highland Tap is well worth checking out and offers a relaxing, cozy, pub-like atmosphere with a more high-scale menu.
NB: We have only gone to the Highland Tap on Thursday evenings, so the atmosphere on the weekends might be much different than when we typically go.
